“Like Conjuring Pure Evil”: Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu Vampire Gets Chilling Preview From Bill Skarsgård (2024)

Summary

  • Bill Skarsgård teases that audiences won't recognize him in character in Robert Eggers' Nosferatu as his voice and appearance are totally different.
  • Skarsgård's take on Count Orlok will be both sexy and repulsive.
  • Skarsgård has proven himself the perfect actor to lead Nosferatu with his previous work in the horror genre and beyond, which highlights his ability to fully transform.

Nosferatu star Bill Skarsgård shares a chilling preview of his character in the upcoming Robert Eggers' film. Serving as a remake of the 1922 film of the same name, which is itself an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula novel, Eggers' Nosferatu movie sees Skarsgård take on the role of the vampire Count Orlok. The film, which is Eggers' latest after The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman, is expected to hit theaters later this year, but Skarsgård's character has remained shrouded in mystery and his appearance hasn't yet been made public.

Now, in a recent interview with Esquire, Skarsgård shares a new tease about his vampiric character in Nosferatu. According to the actor, he worked with an opera singer to bring his voice down to its lowest possible pitch, and his makeup for filming every day took between three and six hours. Check out his comments below:

“It took its toll. It was like conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me. I do not think people are gonna recognize me in it. He’s gross. But it is very sexualized. It’s playing with a sexual fetish about the power of the monster and what that appeal has to you. Hopefully you’ll get a little bit attracted by it and disgusted by your attraction at the same time.”

In addition to Skarsgård, Nosferatu stars Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Ineson, and Emma Corin.

Bill Skarsgård Is A Perfect Choice For Nosferatu

While many questions still remain about Skarsgård's Count Orlok, the actor has already proven himself the perfect choice for the role. The actor, of course, rose to fame largely due to his work in the horror genre, in particular with the adaptation of Stephen King's IT. Skargård played Pennywise the Clown in these two hit films, which were both generally well-received critically and successes at the box office.

Bill Skarsgård is playing Nosferatu in the 2024 remake of this horror classic, but this isn't the first time he has played a vampire.

As with Nosferatu, Skarsgård essentially disappears as Pennywise, and his performance still shines through despite the bold makeup, prosthetics, and costuming. The actor's laugh and voice, in particular, are two of the most memorable aspects of his take on the character. In addition to previously playing a larger-than-life fantastical monster, Skarsgård has affirmed his status as one of the most interesting actors working in Hollywood with his roles in movies like Barbarbian and as part of the cast of John Wick: Chapter 4.

Skarsgård is also set to star in the remake of The Crow. Although the film isn't out yet, the first trailer has teased another fairly drastic (and dark) transformation for the actor. Nosferatu is scheduled to hit theaters in December, meaning Skarsgård's Count Orlok will hopefully be revealed in the next few months when a full trailer for Eggers' film is eventually released. Hopefully, however, the trailer leaves some mystery alive regarding the character and Skarsgård's performance.
