H.Y. “Hsin-Yi” Hanna is an award winning author of suspense and mystery novels. Hanna has also written sweet romance and romantic suspense, and a series of children’s middle grade series of mysteries.
Hanna’s series include: the “Oxford Tearoom Mysteries” series, the “Tender Mysteries” series, the “Big Honey Dog Mysteries” series, the “Summer Beach Vets” series, and the “Bewitched by Chocolate Mysteries” series. Her debut novel, “Curse of the Scarab” was released in the year 2013, and is the first in her “Big Honey Dog Mysteries” series.
She graduated from Oxford University getting her Master of Studies in Social Anthropology and her BA and MA in Biological Sciences.
After trying a handful of jobs, she returned to her first love of writing. She worked in freelance journalism for many years with articles and short stories published in NZ, Australia, and the United Kingdom. She has won awards for her journalism, novels, short stories, and poetry.
Hanna has been a globetrotter her entire life, and grew up in many different countries and has lived in a few different cultures. From New Jersey to Dubai, to Sydney to London. She has settled happily in Perth, Western Australia. She lives here with her husband and Muesli (who is a rescue cat and is a star in her “Oxford Tearoom Mystery” series).
“A Scone to Die For” is the first novel in the “Oxford Tearoom Mysteries” series, which was released in the year 2016. An American tourist is killed with a scone in the quaint Oxfordshire tearoom that Gemma Rose owns, and quickly finds herself deep in a mystery. One that involves long hidden secrets from Oxford’s past.
She is armed with insider knowledge of the University and she has help from four nosy old women from the village (not to mention the tiny tabby Muesli), she sets out to solve the mystery. She has to deal with her matchmaking mom and Devlin O’Connor’s (her old love from college and now a CID Detective) return.
The body count rises and her business is going under, will she find the killer before things go worse?
The little old ladies in this added tons of laughs, and the other characters provide a ton of enjoyment too. The entire book is a great recipe for a hilarious murder mystery. Hanna does a great job of describing the village, it is vivid enough to picture in your mind. Here is a easy and fun read, especially when you have a few free hours set aside to spend only reading this.
“Tea with Milk and Murder” is the second novel in the “Oxford Tearoom Mysteries” series, which was released in the year 2016. Gemma Rose is at a cocktail party at Oxford and hears a sinister conversation right before a student at the University is killed. Is there a connection? Might her best friend Cassie’s boyfriend have a hand in the poisoning?
Gemma starts her own investigation, with the nosy ladies from the village and Devlin O’Connor. Her mom wreaks havoc at Gemma’s English tearoom and her best buddy is angry at her snooping. This mystery has more twists than a chocolate pretzel.
Much too late, Gemma finds out that she might just be the next target on the killer’s mind. Is Muesli going to be able to save the day?
Another funny and thrilling murder mystery that Hanna has written. It stands out from other similar books is how she beautifully describes Oxford. She makes it obvious that Oxford is a dear place to her, and the town would be familiar if people ever went to visit the place, due to the descriptions found in the books.
“Two Down, Bun to Go” is the third novel in the “Oxford Tearoom Mysteries” series, which was released in the year 2016. Gemma Rose gets a sinister phone call in the middle of the night that thrusts her right into the middle of a brand new murder mystery. This time around Seth, her friend, gets arrested as the police’s prime suspect. The grisly murder in an old Oxford college’s cloisters points to a feud of bitterness inside the University, but Gemma finds some unexpected clues coming up in her tiny Cotswolds village.
At the same time, her love life is in turmoil while she struggles to decide between Lincoln Green (the eminent doctor), and Devlin O’Connor. She also has to deal with finding a new baking chef, while her tearoom is in hot water.
Her mischievous tabby cat and her exasperating mom drive her nuts and the nosy Old Biddies are on her heels. Gemma has to crack the toughest case so far if she wants to keep her friend from spending life in jail.
These books have a great cast, especially the Old Biddies and Gemma’s mom. It is this cast of characters that really helps to make the books as good as they are. They provide a ton of laughs and make these stories a lot of fun. The plot is interesting, the pacing is always lively, and there is an adorable cat. Thrown in is just the right amount of romance to boot.
“Till Death Do Us Tart” is the fourth novel in the “Oxford Tearoom Mysteries” series, which was released in the year 2016. Gemma enters Muesli in the cat show at the village’s fair, and winds up stumbling on a murder. When her meddling mom and the Old Biddies start up an investigation of their own, Gemma is left with no choice but to join in.
She quickly finds there is something much more sinister sandwiched in with the luscious jam tarts and Victoria sponge cakes. Murder is not the sole thing on Gemma’s mind. She also has the house hunting that is going absolutely nowhere, the freaky kitchen explosions in her English tearoom. As well as the offer from her detective boyfriend that she has a tough time refusing.
With things close to hitting a boiling point, will Gemma be able to solve the case before the killer is able to kill someone else?

Love her books. I’m a 78 year old retired English teacher. I have felt condescending toward romance novels all my life. My dear friend the retired librarian had a couple of cozy mysteries lying around her house when I visited a while back. I asked, “Do you read those?” “Of course!” she said. She told me I should not feel shame for enjoying such marvelous books. Shortly after, I discovered H.Y. Hanna through Kindle unlimited. I am, delightfully, hooked.
