Gardening Gloves for Children - Kids Do Gardening (2024)

Getting a pair of gardening gloves for your children is a great way to get them involved in jobs that you simply wouldn’t do with your bare hands. We know, as adults, that there is something magic about the feeling of soil in your fingers and you certainly won’t want to take that experience away from your child.

However, some jobs just require gloves to protect your hands from nasties! One of these may well be the removal of weeds in case you accidentally run into a stinging nettle – OUCH!

Why gardening gloves are important

Obviously they have the practical uses and will allow your child to get involved in tasks that you simply cannot do with your bare hands. Naturally in the garden environment, hands can also get wet which causes problems when trying to use tools. Many of the gardening gloves are coated in latex on the bottom which will offer a substantial amount of grip for those types of conditions. They are also extremely useful when you are outside in the colder/wetter months of the year so that you don’t ruin the lovely wooly gloves that won’t fair so well when they’re wet.

What should you look for in a good quality gardening glove?

In our opinion there are two types of gardening gloves. The ones that help you get the ‘hard jobs done’ and those that are used in ‘leisurely gardening’. Both serve a very different purpose. You will want to ensure that the gloves are breathable and where you might be using tools, the latex grip offers some protection.

It is also worth noting that some simply have protection up to the wrist and others offer a knitted elastic wrist which will help when wearing them for longer periods of time (like those in the picture below)

In the same way that we would buy them as adults, they need to be bought with the tasks that the children will be doing in mind.
